Merritt Mental Health was founded foremost to serve the mental health needs of patients and families. A vital and closely related mission is collaboration with other physicians to maximize patient outcomes.
Physicians from all specialties and subspecialties should look upon Merritt Mental Health as an “everything psychiatry” starting point for diagnosis and treatment planning. Additionally, we provide second opinions, referrals, and care coordination for previously diagnosed patients who are unsure what the “next best steps” should be. We aid with planning and client-specific searches for in- and out-of-network psychiatrists and therapists as well as higher levels of psychiatric and addiction care, such as intensive outpatient programs and residential treatment centers.
Our most unique service is direct consultation with concerned family members about the best strategies for helping their loved ones.
Finally, please think of MMH as your home base for curbsides. As a professional courtesy to colleagues, we welcome your inquiries and look forward to helping you to obtain the best psychiatric care available for your patients.
Primary Care Doctors
In medical school at Case Western Reserve Dr. Merritt was in the first class of students to participate in the “Primary Care Track,” a new program designed to teach doctors-in-training skills in both the science of medicine and the art of compassionate care of the whole patient and family. Primary care was Dr. Merritt’s first passion in medicine. Only after a period of intense reflection at the conclusion of medical school did he decide to pursue psychiatry as his area of specialty instead.
Merritt Mental Health views primary care to be at the top of the hierarchy of all medical specialties. We counsel every patient and family member we encounter to find a wise primary care doctor to guide them through the challenges of illness and the maze of the American healthcare system. Seen through one lens, Merritt Mental Health is a consultancy similar to a hospital psychiatric C/L service, providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations. Seen through another, Merritt Mental Health is a “primary care psychiatry practice,” sharing core values with primary care medicine of the centrality of the doctor-patient relationship, expert guidance and referrals to other practitioners, and continuity of care over a lifetime.
Psychiatrists and Addiction Specialists
An overriding goal of Merritt Mental Health is to connect patients to qualified physicians who treat their conditions. In making referrals, we take into consideration level of acuity, patient preferences, insurance status, capacity to pay, geographic location, and physician practice profile. We strive to provide guidance and referrals to every patient and family member who contacts us, whether they formally consult with MMH or not. Therefore, in order to serve patients and families well, we maintain a broad network of psychiatrists and addiction specialists and are familiar with which types of referrals they accept.
If you are a psychiatrist or an addiction physician, please contact us to let us know what clinical services you provide and where you practice.
Other Physician Specialists
Our goal is to help patients connect to the best care possible. This is the abiding mission that motivates us every day. Feel free to refer patients or family members to Merritt Mental Health for any mental health need or concern at any time. Alternately, we invite physicians to request a curbside. We believe in collaborative care and will share insights with you freely upon request.
