Clinical Consultations are held in San Francisco at one of the two offices of Merritt Mental Health. The consultation is conducted in either a single 90-minute session or two 45-minute sessions. In rare circumstances, more than 90 minutes is necessary to complete the consultation.
Step One: Assessment & Diagnosis
Diagnosis in the field of psychiatry is an inexact science and often a sensitive matter for patients and families. There are concerns about being “labeled.” Some people feel that a diagnosis such as ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, OCD, or a Substance Use Disorder constrains the vast complexities of a human life into an artificially narrow box.
After two decades of experience in multiple hospital and outpatient settings, Dr. Merritt approaches assessment & diagnosis with enormous respect for the complexities of each person’s life. Simply put, the purpose of diagnosis is to guide both the doctor and patient towards best treatment planning and best outcomes. We discuss diagnosis with you with the intent of helping you to get as well as you can as soon as you can.
Step Two: Health Services Planning
Clinical consultations may be scheduled for the purpose of either an initial evaluation or a second opinion. After this, you may then request that Merritt Mental Health provide you with referrals and care coordination. In this case, we take time to discuss your specific needs as they relate to treatment type, insurance, finances, location, and other factors important to you. Then, with your preferences and needs guiding us, we provide you with appropriate referrals and resources based on research conducted on your behalf.
After the initial consultation, our doors remain permanently open to you for ongoing advice and guidance. Our mission is to remain a trusted resource for you until your goals related to personal health, relationships, and work and/or school are successfully reached.
